If you’re planning a trip to Nicaragua, visiting the city of León is a must. Located just 90 kilometers northwest of the capital city of Managua, León is a colonial city with a rich history and plenty of cultural attractions to explore. In this article, we’ll go over the different transportation options available for getting from Managua to León, including the most popular and affordable ways to travel.
Option 1: Public Bus
Taking a bus is the most common and economical way to travel from Managua to León. Two types of buses operate between these two cities: local buses and express buses. Local buses are cheaper, but they make several stops along the way, which can add to the travel time. Express buses are faster, but they are also more expensive.
If you prefer to take an express bus, you can head to the bus terminal in front of UCA (Universidad Centroamericana) in Managua, which is located in the central part of the city about 20 minutes walk away from Managua Backpackers Inn (close to Metrocentro). Look for buses with the sign “León Exprés” on the front. The fare for an express bus is around 60 cordobas (about USD 1.80), and the trip takes about an hour and a half to 2 hours.
Option 2: Taxi
Another option for traveling from Managua to León is by taxi. Taxis are more expensive than buses, but they can be a more comfortable and convenient option if you have a lot of luggage or if you’re traveling with a group.
To take a taxi, you can hail one on the street or ask your hotel to arrange one for you. The fare for a taxi is around $40-50 USD, and the trip takes about an hour and a half.
